Mine Hosts, Tony and Angela have flitted from the "Great Wall" in Helensburgh to run this Oriental haven on Britains only "mainland island", as the Kintyre Tourist Board would have us believe. Unusually for, a fishing port, seafood is not currently big on the menu but Tony loves his seafood and I foresee changes afoot. If you enjoy seafood, ask Tony what's available, he's at the fishmarket most days, weather permitting so there may just be a surprise afoot. We enjoyed a fresh scallop and prawn with ginger and spring onion etc. accompanied by fish in black bean and I think, a fish sauce. Both exceedingly delicious and neither were on the menu. Our other maincourse, from the menu, was SYABAS Lamb, equally delicious. We visited at lunchtime expecting to place to be quiet, the last time I visited C/town it was shut, I mean C/town, not the restaurant. What a surprise, although early in their trading day the place was busy with an East Coast family there for their umteenth time, one of their parting shats as they left was, "this is the best Chinese food we've ever tasted", with "see you tomorrow" as a parting gesture. That says it all. The restaurant itself is efficiently run with Angella and one other girl waiting table with accasional help from Tony, a nice touch was the miniature Chopsticks securing the bun at the back of the waitresses head. I'm sorry I didn't get her name or she would have had more of a mention. Back to the facts, apart from the seafood the menu is quite extensive with something to suit all pallets, a starter I've not seen before was BBQ Pork Crackling, delicious. I'll say no more except as always I urge you to dispense with the KF&S and get stuck in with Chopsticks. JL, JPL & JAL Arran
YUMLA took over from China Blossam 2005/6, a difficult act to follow performed with grace and elegance. As stated in the title of this review please see the review I have only just submitted under China Blossam, I couldn't find any reference to YUMLA a few days agoand just assumed it wasn't included in the Touchlocal Directory. Seemingly surounded by the results of the current wave of Chinese Buffet restaurants YUMLA is an island of elegancefor the discerning and dedicated Chinese Diner. The staff, all dressed in Cheong Sam, (a pleasure to the Ham Sap Chi among us) deal with your needs in a pleasant, cheerful manner. An extensive business lunch menu is available for those of us with little time to spare, however, ask for the a la carte menu if you wish to linger and enjoy Chinese Cuisine at it's, very nearly, best. Take your time, ponder, consult with "Madre d" and you'll be overwhelmed by the choice and quality of the food available. The restauant is open all afternoon so you don't have to throw the food down your neck to be out by 2pm. I will not, at this stage, go into the different choices available, I have not found a dish yet that I did not enjoy. Go along there next time you're in Glasgow, it's just off Argyl Street towards Ingram Street, and oft stated, discard the KF&S and get stuck in with chopsticks and rice bowl. Enjoy! JL Arran
Under new management for approx one year (17 July 07) Good sized portions served with alacrity. The food was generally good but lacked a certain something. For a starter I had Crispy Char Tsui Har, which turned out to be Filo Pastry wrapped King Prawn Tails with a mild chilli dip, it was quite pleasant though somewhat "Pub Grubbish" Two main course served together with Egg fried rice with extra garlic, a particular favourite of mine, splendid, the chef didn't skimp on the Garlic. The main couse dishes were Sliced Fillet Beef with pepper sauce (the pepper sauce recommended in place of mandarin sauce)and Roast duck with Plum Sauce. The Beef was absolutely Ding Ho, even though the sauce had my eyes watering a couple of times. The beef was so tender that even my aged nashers were able to bite through the more than a mouth full pieces. The Duck was disapointing in as much as the sauce was a little bland, instead of plum sauce perhaps a watered down variant of the thick and chewey Hoi Sin we get with Shredded Duck and Pancakes. The Restaurant itself was clean and bright, if somewhat sterile. It had a distinct European atmosphere with moulded plywood chairs and matching tables. The restaurant was sufficiently quiet during my visit to enable me to engage the waitress in tete a tete and discuss my opinions and my own ideas as to how the ambiance of the place could be improved. These were met with a positive attitude from all concerned though in all honesty the improvements cannot happen over night. Again, I would recommend to every one to discard the Knife and Fork and get used to Chop Sticks and rice bowls. If you go in a company (two or more) choose your favourite main courses but don't keep them to your self, share them with your companions, take your time over the meal, believe me, your enjoyment will be appreciated. Unfortunately, the Bay Hotel was demolished mid 2006 and is currently being replaced by a block of flats.
A seemingly quiet restaurant a small distance from the main shopping area of Irving offers a very large and varied a la carte menu at very reasonable prices. 3 of us dined with two bottles of wine and two cans of cola for under £80.00. A unique "Chef's Special" is a variation of thin sliced meats with pancates and sauces, makes a pleasant change from Duck. Our selection of main couse was delivered promptly, steaming hot and obviously freshly cooked, two variations of squid were cooked to perfection with just a hint of firmness. We have a large appetite for food, especialy chinese, the quantity of food served very nearly saw us off. Ditch the business lunch, eat a la carte, ditch the knife and fork, get stuck in with chopsticks, enjoy the meal. One down point is the very limited wine list, though the wine we had was rather moreish. JL, JPL & JAL Isle of Arran
